OMO OLOSAN

She torments me
Day and night she torments me
She makes me soil my knickers every night,
Sweet pain from the pleasures tickled in my dreams,
Those buttocks torment me
Even with the baggy gowns she wears
I can still make out the clap of her buttocks
Every time she walks by
Her tray of oranges balanced on her head,
She makes my walking difficult
And I have to pretend all was well
I have to pretend I felt no warmth when I give her the 200 naira note,
Whispering to her to keep the change
While she flashes her toothy smile at my mother
Thanking her for her benevolence

She didn’t notice me, she wouldn’t notice me
But I know she knows
So I lured her in
That faithful afternoon
While the grounds are being moistened by the rain,
She followed me willingly
She followed me like a sheep meant for slaughter
She followed me like an offering
Smiling and flaunting her gap teeth
The beast in me was awakened
The demons in me possessed me
I slaughtered her!
I took what I thought she offered
I sucked her sweet oranges to the point of soreness
Her pleas were like buzzes from a stubborn fly
They were drowned with slaps and blows
She was fierce
She fought me well
But she wanted it, didn’t she?
I made sure I spilled my seed in her
Hot and slimy,
And I smacked my lips from thirst abated,
Her baggy clothes were on the floor
In shreds
And she was cowering on my bed
Looking lost, but the fierce look was still there
My zipper was still undone as I made to fling her clothes at her
She wouldn’t wear it
She rose from the bed,
Naked like the day she was molded
The beast in me was reawakened
But the cold fire in her eyes stopped me
She walked naked out of my room
And she left her tray of orange on my doorstep
And she opened the gate without the help of Kasali
And she walked into the street like that
And she kept walking while I followed at a safe distance,
And she walked against the traffic
And she walked against the jeers of market men
And the cries of market women
And she walked on and on and on
Until a big trailer came from nowhere to end everything
Everything became mashed flesh in a minute!
people gathered around the driver,
Curses and tears filled the air
The blood, the blood was everywhere!
I ran blindly home
My legs were heavy but I ran still
Her tray was still on the doorstep
Kasali rushed to carry it and flung it
Into the nearest bin
My secret was safe with him
The bloodstained bedspread and the tattered baggy clothes were burnt to ashes by Kasali
I was free
And she stopped coming into my dreams every night
Her shadows keep me company now.
