Every human has “enemies” somewhere, for the average Nigerian, it is the people from his village who are “following” him, everybody hates the average Nigerian man, every Nigerian lives with the paranoia of some set of people from his or her great grandfather’s village being the one responsible for his downfall or failure. This people or in some situations, things, are what is called “The monitoring spirits”.
Nowadays, the meaning has shifted from the above definition to online trolls, who come disguised as fans for celebrities, relatives for we average people without a celebrated life, bullies for some of us who has haters in school or in our workplace. They follow you on social media platforms only to bring you down at every slightest opportunity.
Monitoring spirits are pain in the ass, everybody knows that, everyone can relate to one idiot coming to their Facebook page to rant nonsense, their Instagram page to come and call them “ugly”, I mean everybody loves to feel fly even if they are as bad looking as a hippo, people as huge as a whale love to be called skinny and not fat, just to feel fly. People take 50 selfies and filter and photoshop the hell out of a single selfie that looks reasonable enough, which is why the pain of being called “ugly” has led loads of people to suicide.
The funny thing is, majority of these monitoring spirits are slobs, losers, never do wells who sit behind a computer or hold their phone and type people to frustration, which is why the sooner we stop attaching our importance to the number of likes we get for our achievements, the better, most great minds have stopped extraordinary works of arts halfway just because they were not praised for what they are doing. Three likes on a Facebook post is enough to discourage the budding writer, musician, the kid who just discovered how to use metal to detect what lies in a ehrrrr plastic bottle.. Lol
I won’t blame social media for all this because heckling and insecurity has always been part of the human society, social media only made it worse. A comment is enough to ruin the live of someone forever.
Word of advice though, start getting used to not being praised, Williams Shakespeare died years ago, but he is still being celebrated, he made a name for himself without accolades on social media, Albert Einstein made ground breaking achievements in the field of science without getting likes on Facebook or Instagram.
Just a little motivation for today, types of monitoring spirits and how to deal with them would be in the next post.. #xoxo. I have missed y’all tho.
