Top of the morning lovelies, I was opportuned to meet with M’kidO for an interview session, it is not unusual to realize some erstwhile unknown or upcoming acts stealing the show or “blowing” however this new kid on the block is climbing up the entertainment ladder in a slow and steady manner. He fuses French into his rap and creates music that is not only alluring but entertaining. Meet M’kidO!

– Can we meet Mkido?
My name is Amosun Mujeeb Adekunle, I am from Osun state. I attended Islamic Nursery and primary school and GOF international college Osogbo. I am a final year student of university of Ilorin studying French and German.
M’kidO is a very playful person.

– How did you come about your stage name M’kdO?
I came about the name in Secondary school, then my nick name used to be Da-Spruce, Spruce up means being neat and tidy and I always look smart in my uniform and other clothes. But I dropped it at a point and I wanted to start using AMAP which is gotten from my surname, middle name and Christian name. So in Yoruba class one day, my mind went to my yoruba name kunle and I decided to join it with my other names which are Mujeeb, Kunle, Iyinola, Da-Spruce, Omolope which gave birth to M’KidO.

– When did you discover you have the talent to create music?
Since primary school, I always sing and dance during every end of the year party even though am not really that sound, I always love computer classes because it assignments requires us going on the Internet at times. So I usually print out the lyrics to the songs of Akon, Rihanna, Chris Brown but after my graduation I started working on how to record my own song.

– What were your parents reaction to your music career?
My mum was shocked, she couldn’t imagine her son trying to pursue music instead of being serious at school, she threatened to report me to my father’s family but we eventually made a deal she gave me a condition to finish my university education before I go into music fully. My dad is late but he was supportive when he was alive

– When did you record your first single?
That was during my post utme exams at OAU, it was a mixtape of Nicki Minaj and Rihanna’s Fly . It was recorded on a laptop and was titled Atide.

– How was it like trying to record for the first time?
It wasn’t easy mehn, I got a chance after many denials.

– Were there setbacks that had made you want to quit at a point?
Yes, there were but the one I could remember vividly was getting discouraged in the studio whenever one of the rap artiste whose name is Replica in the group we formed The Spiderman, drops songs whenever he chooses. He always make me feel like a mumu (Idiot) whenever he is recording, he is very talented. I joined another group after releasing a song titled Joromi, A group also made me travel down to Ivory Coast to shoot a video with the crew RAVEN, with the likes of Tberry , sherrykay and skyLO.

– Who do you look up to in the music industry?
I look up to Wizkid AKA Baba nla, the international act Rico Amaj is one of mentors. I also like Reekado Banks.

– Who would you like to feature soon on your next single/album?
I plan to feature top Nigerian artistes like Olamide, Wizkid, Reekado Banks, Falz, Chidinma, Seriki, Fuji icons like K1 d’Ultimate, Saheed Osupa and my mentor Rico Amaj.

– Were trying to copy Yemi Alade by singing and rapping in French?
No, at all I have always loved to rap and sing in French, my mentor sings in French too and he uses different dialects of French, besides my French is very very fluent.

– How does it feel like when you get told you look like Reekado Banks?
I feel normal because I really don’t see the resemblance, although some people call Reekado when they see me. I respect him

– Your latest single Gbewudani is currently making waves, what inspired the song?
What inspired it is funny, I was coming from Lagos to Ilorin with an artiste named Generous and there was this woman who kept shouting olohun ma she wa ni Gbewudani o, ewo bi iyawo nse pase fun oko (May we not become weaklings like some men, see how this woman is ordering her husband around)

My relationship with them is on a cool level.

– Have you received any special recognition from a top music act before? Who was it?
Yes, many of them actually, the likes of 9ice,Fally Ipupa, Reekado, Seriki, Chidinma, Dj Arafat and Rico Amaj.

– Who is Mkido’s bae?
I don’t have a bae, music is my bae.

– LOL, every artistes use that
line.
I am serious, plus I don’t talk about that part of my life if there is one.

– You have really pink lips for someone so dark, did you use the pink lip balm as well?
I have always had cute clean pink lips but I made it look pinker when I started using a method my friend taught me, I would add lime with sugar and rub it on my lips before I go to bed and the dead skin would peel off before the next day.

– Describe your kind of music.
My kind of music is Zouk hip hop RnB with trap afro.

– Eminem or Drake?
Drake.

– What are your views on the current trend of Babymama among top Nigerian artistes?
Babymama keh? I don’t support it, I respect sound sultan, it is better to stick to a woman legally like him. I don’t even drink or smoke too because I promised my mother I wouldn’t join bad gang or get involved in bad vices.

– Where do you see yourself in the next few years?
I see my self in great places, I was born to do great things.

– Can you give up music, ever?
I can never give up. I can only switch my style of music.

– What sacrifices have you made in your music career?
I missed exams in 200level because of music.

– What was your most embarrassing moment as an artiste?
That would be during the coke studio competition, I was performing and someone threw a bottle of coke on me on stage!!! I felt sad.

– Which Nigerian female act do you have a crush on?
Chidinma it is, I have been crushing ever since I gave her a peck. (*laughs*)

– What advise do you have for other upcoming acts?
To my fellow upcoming artistes ,there is one thing I want us to focus on , which is God , then listen to your parents advises, because the blessings of both parents is the best. Never rush for success ,if success is yours definitely it would never escape you, because success is a journey not a destination. I pray God bless my mum, I really love my mum, she has always been there for me. She’s a great woman indeed and in need, I pray she lives long enough.
