Have you ever been compromised into doing something you do not want to do? How often are you made a prisoner to the opinion of others? Do you strive to break away from the norm?
Few months ago, I attended an AIESEC meeting, I just joined AIESEC then so I was pretty unfamiliar with the way they do things, since it was a Sunday I decided to wear a pink Ankara gown, I got to where the meeting was being held and I saw people dressed in shirt and trousers complete with tie and shiny shoes, everybody was putting on a corporate attire! I was confused and I took a seat at the back, later I learnt it was a LM=Legal meeting and everyone has to turn out in corporate wears, I felt embarrassed and refused to show my face, when everyone was asked to move to the front and occupy the seats there, the president neglected me, probably because I wasn’t dressed the way everyone was dressed, I couldn’t take it anymore and I left. I wish I had not, it made me a chicken, I wish I had stayed and get comfortable in my own skin, wearing what they were wearing wouldn’t make me comfortable either but I was too nervous to realize that, so I ran, I ran away from something everyone did not notice.
How you ever experience this? How often do you feel out of place in a gathering when you don’t seem to have an identity similar to theirs? Things get pretty uncomfortable right? And you failed to express yourself and your opinions? Right.
Do you know it is high time you stop shrinking yourself so others can get bigger? Yeah, most times the so called confident people are nothing but empty barrels who re-enact things others have done, the world waits for you and your uniqueness which you desperately try to bury.
It is not a crime to be different, staying true to yourself gives you peace of mind, you need not wear white and black because everyone else is wearing white and black, insecurity makes us slaves, we care too much about what people think of us when in reality nobody cares! We would want to wear white and black so they think we can afford a white and black outfit when we really want to wear a red and blue outfit. So we end up looking like everyone else, it becomes a uniform that makes you look like everyone else.
Do you know 95% of the world do the same thing? Why not try to be the 5%, have you noticed the outstanding people around are those who have broken down boundaries and are forging their own path? We can comfortably count the number of extraordinary people who excel in what they do because they choose to do this has differently, stop joining the bandwagon, do not learn now to bake because everyone is learning how to bake cakes, there would be so many cake business that you’d get lost in the crowd, why not learn something you truly how passion for, no matter how inconspicuous it is.
Criticism is part of being different, don’t be scared to receive scathing remarks for you will receive compliments at the same time, people would envy you for being different but they might show that through sarcasm and criticism, do not let it get to you, Aristotle once said Criticism is something you can easily avoid by saying nothing, doing nothing and being nothing.
Dare to be different!
